The famed Japanese animation studio has shared the opening scene from its upcoming film Earwig and the Witch. The clip shows Earwig being dropped off at a home for children by her motorcycle-riding mother (voiced by Kacey Musgraves) who leaves her with a cassette tape and instructions to never go anywhere else.
The film marks the first time the studio stepped back from its signature, hand-drawn art style, and opted for full 3D CGI animation, a decision which sparked controversy among fans and critics. The new feature film is directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of acclaimed Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki.
Earwig and the Witch will be available in selected cinemas from February 3, and available to stream on HBO Max from February 5. Watch the opening scene below.
